Our take on The Roottrees are Dead
Its focused family-tree structure gives the investigation a clear direction, but limits the experience to evidence searches and relationship deductions rather than broader exploration, combat, or character-driven role-playing.
What is The Roottrees are Dead?
Set in 1998, this genealogical mystery begins after a private jet carrying the Roottree family crashes.
Their fortune must be distributed among relatives, but the true blood relations are unclear. Players search an early-Internet setting for photographs, books, articles, and other evidence, then use family connections to complete a family tree. Each correct placement narrows the possible locations of remaining names and photographs, while later clues become more obscure. The Steam edition adds hand-drawn illustrations, a 3D living-room view, interface improvements, remastered music, sound effects, voiced cinematics, and Easter eggs. It also includes Roottreemania, a separate mystery following the family after the main story, with another family tree and secrets surrounding an American maple candy empire.
