Our take on The Monster Within
Health is both a resource and a deck-building boundary: staying well preserves Day cards, while deliberate decline opens Monster cards and brings the character closer to losing control.
What is The Monster Within?
The Monster Within is a deck-building card game with roguelike progression and a 1950s horror-comic theme.
Choose from six classic monsters, then construct a deck during each round using Day, Night, and Monster cards. Cards can damage opponents, provide protection, or support further purchases. Health determines access to different cards: staying healthy preserves Day options, while losing health opens stronger Monster cards and increases the risk of losing control. Each monster has its own cards and strategy, and can combine with two others to form a mashup monster. Afflictions provide additional powers and strategic choices. The game includes a Blood system that raises difficulty over time, along with 10 monsters, 10 mashups, almost 50 afflictions, and almost 400 cards.
How The Monster Within plays
- 01Health-based deck access
- Current health changes which card types can be purchased, with lower health exposing stronger Monster cards.
- 02Monster combinations
- Each of the six playable monsters can pair with two others to create a distinct mashup.
- 03Affliction choices
- Players select from nearly 50 afflictions each round to add powers and alter their strategy.
- 04Blood difficulty system
- The Blood system increases the challenge over repeated play and speeds access to additional content.
- 05Large card pool
- The completed game contains almost 400 cards, including cards that can be unlocked during play.

Shogun Showdown also combines deck building with roguelike progression, but centers on turn-based combat, positional play, attack tiles, and facing a Shogun. The Monster Within instead uses health-dependent card access, monster identities, afflictions, and card-based battles in a 1950s horror setting.
