Our take on The Land of Pain
Rather than giving the protagonist weapons, the game makes survival depend on fleeing, hiding, and manipulating the environment. Its adventure structure therefore replaces combat encounters with pursuit, darkness, environmental interaction, and puzzle solving.
What is The Land of Pain?
The Land of Pain is a cosmic-horror adventure viewed through the protagonist’s eyes, set across a vast, gloomy environment.
Exploration covers deserted structures, underground passages, wetlands, burial grounds, and other places while an old mystery is uncovered. There is no weapon-based combat; survival depends on fleeing, hiding, and using nearby surroundings against a relentless pursuer. A lantern illuminates dark areas but may reveal the protagonist in exposed spaces. Players gather items, examine clues, interact with the world, and complete puzzles. CryEngine visuals, photogrammetry, and environmental audio shape the atmosphere. It serves as a spiritual prequel to The Alien Cube.
How The Land of Pain plays
- 01Unarmed survival
- Players evade the pursuing enemy by running, hiding, and using environmental objects rather than weapons.

- 03Lantern-based exploration
- A lantern illuminates dark areas while potentially exposing the player outside the shadows.
- 04Environmental puzzles
- Objects and gathered clues are used to investigate and solve the land’s ancient mystery.
The Land of Pain compared to similar games
Jusant is also an exploration-focused adventure, but centers on climbing a tall tower, stamina management, and discovering the remains of a bygone civilization. The Land of Pain instead uses first-person horror, environmental puzzles, darkness, and evasion from an unrelenting enemy.
