Our take on The Inner Sea
Its defining structure is a procedurally generated archipelago: every play-through changes the islands available for exploration, trade, combat, settlement, and faction expansion.
What is The Inner Sea?
Set in a mysterious 17th-century archipelago, this RPG sandbox begins with a single ship after a storm strands the crew inside a navigable sea.
Explore a newly generated island group in each play-through, choosing between alliances with local inhabitants and raids across the region. Recruit crew members, gain experience through combat and missions, and develop their abilities. Plan ship routes, pause tactical naval battles, trade goods, and search for resources. Fleet management includes capturing vessels from different cultures, adding them to the fleet, and upgrading older ships. The game also supports faction creation, settlement building on uninhabited islands, relocating settlers, and developing small hamlets into cities.
How The Inner Sea plays
- 01Procedural Archipelago
- Each play-through creates a different island group populated by castaways from numerous cultures.
- 02Tactical Naval Battles
- Ship routes can be set before combat, with the action pausable during engagements.
- 03Fleet Development
- Captured vessels from different cultures can join the fleet, while older ships can receive upgrades.
- 04Crew Progression
- Crew members gain experience from battles and completed missions as their abilities develop.
- 05Settlement Building
- A created faction can settle empty islands, relocate settlers, and expand hamlets with improvements.
The Inner Sea compared to similar games
The Inner Sea combines fleet building, tactical naval combat, trading, crew progression, and island settlement in one sandbox. Sailing Era also centers on nautical exploration in the 15th to 17th century, but its description focuses on ocean routes and discovery rather than the Inner Sea’s procedural archipelago, faction creation, and settlement development.
