Our take on The Cold War Era
The one-hour match structure keeps each conflict focused, but limits the time available for long-term planning and gradual developments. The map interface also prioritizes national influence and strategic initiatives over detailed unit-level control.
What is The Cold War Era?
The Cold War Era is a single-player real-time strategy game about the conflict between the USA and USSR from the 1950s through the 1990s.
Players select either side and rewrite history through military deployments, spy networks, propaganda, political unrest, and Space Race activities. Military units can support allied governments or rebel movements in opposing countries. Spy networks affect government propaganda and opposition strongholds, while rockets, satellites, and astronauts contribute to global influence.
A map and menu interface displays country influence, military units, spy activity, budgets, scores, and Space Race milestones. Each matchup takes one hour from beginning to end. The game also includes an in-game TV stream using Cold War news footage edited around players' activities as free video mod DLC.

The Cold War Era compared to similar games
Xenonauts also uses a Cold War-era setting, but its description centers on turn-based squads defending Earth from alien invasion, while The Cold War Era focuses on USA-versus-USSR influence, espionage, propaganda, and the Space Race. Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation is described around vast armies, technological singularity, and a galactic empire, whereas The Cold War Era covers political and military actions among countries. Old World follows empires through multiple generations, unlike The Cold War Era's one-hour Cold War matchups.
