ActionIs The Citadel worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Fans of classic first-person shooters who want a long level-based campaign
- Action players who prefer projectile dodging over hitscan gunfire
- Players seeking repeated attempts, boss fights, and optional difficulty mechanics
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a relaxed or low-pressure shooter, since the campaign is framed around harsh combat and challenging bosses
- Players who prefer short, lightly structured sessions rather than six episodes with 30 main levels and secret stages
- Players looking for multiplayer or competitive modes rather than a campaign-focused shooter
Our take on The Citadel
The presentation foregrounds brutality and classic-shooter homage, but the structure is also forgiving in one notable way: unlimited continues and hub areas let players retry difficult sections. Optional weapon jams and breakage add a separate difficulty layer rather than defining every run.
What is The Citadel?
The Citadel is a first-person shooter built around old-school combat.
Its campaign covers six episodes with 30 main levels and six secret stages, ending in encounters with six bosses. Players carry 14 weapon types, each with secondary firing functions, plus three single-use special weapons. Combat uses projectiles rather than hitscan attacks, making dodging central to survival. Enemies include cultists, drones, mecha tanks, and flamethrower troops. Light enemies can be kicked, stunned, or pushed into hazards such as lava and pits. Some weapons can be upgraded or replaced with stronger versions. Unlimited continues allow repeated attempts, while hub areas provide pauses between challenges. Optional settings add leaning and weapon-condition mechanics, including jams and breakage for automatic weapons.
How The Citadel plays
- 01Multi-episode campaign
- The main campaign contains 30 levels across six episodes, with six additional secret stages.
- 02Projectile combat
- Enemy attacks use projectiles, so movement and evasion determine whether incoming fire connects.
- 03Weapon variety
- The arsenal includes 14 weapon categories, alternate firing functions, and three consumable special weapons.
- 04Environmental enemy attacks
- Light opponents can be kicked or stunned and may be sent into lava or pits through positioning.
- 05Optional weapon wear
- An optional setting can make automatic weapons jam during combat and eventually stop working.
