Encounters include monsters and creatures from ancient tales, such as captive oxen and phoenixes. Items, weapons, and armor collected inside the tower appear on the character. When the character dies, the run is recorded and play starts again with that character. The story follows a monk descending into the Taoyao pagoda to defeat its threat and restore peace to the land.
