Our take on Super X Chess
Rather than keeping every piece's movement fixed, this chess variant lets players combine their own pieces, changing how they move. It also includes randomized starting positions and standard chess, so the game places altered rules alongside a conventional mode.
What is Super X Chess?
Super X Chess offers three modes: a variant where captured pieces can be combined with the player's own pieces, Super960 with randomized starting positions, and standard chess.
Combined pieces can move like both component pieces, while combining two of the same type can create new movement rules. The game includes 64 starting-position scenarios, including setups with unusual armies. Single-player games let players choose an AI opponent with difficulty levels estimated from 700 to 2200 Elo.
Local multiplayer is available, and online play is possible through Steam Remote Play. Players can switch between 2D and 3D views, use tutorials, review past games, set army-strength handicaps, and undo moves. Combining pieces increases their strength but costs time and reduces the number of pieces available to contest squares.
