Our take on Sunset Hills
Players looking for a substantial role-playing system may hit a wall when progress depends on dialogue, examining scenes, and manipulating objects. Those who want to avoid war themes may bounce off the story when Nico’s memories and reunions turn to wartime experiences and loss.
What is Sunset Hills?
After leaving military service, novelist Nico boards a train and crosses several countries and cities in the years following the war.
He reunites with former comrades, meets residents, witnesses local incidents, and gradually uncovers the motive behind his travels. The game presents its story through illustrated, novel-style artwork, three-dimensional settings, two-dimensional characters, and puppies of varied shapes and personalities. Its point-and-click challenges use dialogue and scene interactions to gather clues and objects. Players then use, combine, or dismantle items to solve problems and open the way forward.
Scenarios include helping others, assisting with crimes, evading chases, and exploring Nico’s wartime memories. The story includes war scenes and themes of loss. The expected play time is about eight hours; future content is planned as a free update.
