We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Players seeking a short, story-focused forest exploration experience
- Fans of first-person games centered on atmosphere rather than combat
- Players interested in painterly visuals and choral sound design
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players looking for long campaigns or extensive progression may find the 30-minute playtime too brief
- Players seeking combat, puzzles, or complex systems may find the exploration-focused structure limited
- Players who prefer conventional realism may not want an expressionist, three-dimensional painting style
Our take on Sunlight
The focused 30-minute format keeps the experience centered on atmosphere and story, but leaves little room for extended exploration, mechanical variety, or substantial replay structure.
What is Sunlight?
Sunlight is a 30-minute first-person exploration game set in a hand-painted forest.
Players follow whispers from trees as they travel through an uncharted landscape and experience a philosophical story. The trees speak through varied voices, genders, and dialects, combining into a shared chorus. Visuals made with Quill present the environment as a three-dimensional painting, while music composed by Tchaikovsky and performed by Kammerkoret Aurum supports the atmospheric presentation. Voice actors from multiple continents contribute to the narrative. The game takes artistic cues from expressionist painters including Monet and Munch. For every downloaded copy, one tree is planted through the developer's climate project.
