Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a forgiving survival experience may hit a wall when resources are limited and adaptation is required.
- Players wanting a tightly directed story may find the open-world sandbox structure too loose.
- Players looking for established multiplayer content may be disappointed because multiplayer is listed as a future update.
Our take on SUM
Players who need generous supplies may bounce off when the island’s limited resources force adaptation. Those expecting multiplayer may hit a wall before starting, since that feature is identified as part of a future update rather than the current play structure.
What is SUM?
SUM is a VR open-world survival sandbox set on a remote, uninhabited island.
Players gather materials, create tools, find food, and adapt to limited supplies while trying to remain alive and eventually escape. The environment changes in real time, including its weather. Survival activities include combining items, preparing dishes from different countries, setting snares, using weapons to hunt animals, and constructing buildings for shelter or other purposes. The game includes ingredients for 27 dishes, with special rewards connected to collecting them. SUM compared to similar games
Mr. Prepper also combines survival and crafting, but places those activities within an underground shelter and a conflict involving nuclear-war preparation and an authoritarian government. SUM instead centers on gathering, cooking, hunting, and construction across a remote island with changing weather. Unplagued focuses on cooperative plague-clearing for teams of up to 4, while SUM’s described play centers on solo island survival.
