Our take on Suffer The Night
The shift between written dungeon-crawling and first-person survival gives the horror distinct modes, but divides play between reading scenarios and exploring a 3D setting.
What is Suffer The Night?
Set in 1989, Suffer The Night follows horror illustrator Stacey Linden alone in a cabin during a storm.
An ominous envelope brings a floppy-disk game into the story, where a text-based dungeon crawler presents grisly scenarios and vivid descriptions. Progress through that game while dealing with interruptions from the figure connected to it. The experience combines first-person survival horror with text-based adventure: explore a changing world, solve puzzles, and face creatures as the story descends into Mr Tops’ world. The two parts bring different kinds of tension, pairing the dungeon crawler’s written scenarios with first-person exploration and survival.
How Suffer The Night plays
- 01Text-based dungeon crawler
- Grisly scenarios and vivid descriptions form a game within the larger horror story.
- 02First-person survival horror
- Exploration and puzzle-solving take place in a world that changes as the story progresses.
- 03Interrupting figure
- A mysterious visitor disrupts play of the floppy-disk game, and those interruptions require a response.
