We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Strategy players who want small-unit tactical missions rather than large-scale army management
- World War I enthusiasts interested in an alternate-history setting with steampunk machinery
- Players who enjoy planning equipment and positioning before dangerous battles
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a large-scale strategy game with armies larger than teams of 8 units
- Players who prefer forgiving combat, since units are described as easily killed and available in small numbers
- Players looking for a conventional historical First World War setting without fantasy powers or steampunk elements
Our take on Steam Squad
Rather than presenting the First World War as strict history, the game relocates its tactical structure to an alternate world with three competing empires, steampunk machinery, and anime-like visual settings. Its small squads and physics-driven battles replace broader army-level command with close management of vulnerable units.
What is Steam Squad?
Steam Squad is a tactical wargame set in an alternative steampunk version of the First World War.
Players choose one of three powers—the Holy Roman, British, or Tianxian Empires—and lead teams of up to 8 units through 30 missions. Objectives include capturing an area, defending a location or person, and carrying out sabotage. Before missions, units can be selected and equipped with weapons, ammunition, and other equipment according to the chosen strategy. Combat uses physics-based mechanics, tactical maps, destructible environments, interactive fauna, and equipment such as tanks, cannons, and mortars. Units can take enemy equipment, and the game includes firearms and machinery inspired by the Great War, melee weapons, and a battle camera with depth-of-field effects.
