Our take on STAY
The real-time premise is central, but the listing gives less emphasis to the pressure created by leaving the game. Time away leaves Quinn alone, and delayed conversations may affect outcomes, making the experience less like a conventional pause-and-return adventure.
What is STAY?
STAY is a puzzle-adventure about Quinn, a kidnapped man trapped in a locked room with access to a chat room.
Communication with him takes place in real time, so time away from the game leaves Quinn alone. Responses affect his trust, emotions, and escape attempts, while delayed conversations can produce consequences. Players guide Quinn through prison puzzles and can use webcams to observe his reactions and actions while away. The game contains 24 chapters, seven endings, numerous possible deaths, branching conversations, different rooms, and hidden details to uncover. Multiple playthroughs reveal more of the story and allow different choices to shape Quinn’s fate.
How STAY plays
- 01Real-Time Conversations
- Time spent away from the game passes while Quinn remains alone, and delayed replies can affect events.
- 02Branching Outcomes
- Choices influence Quinn’s trust, emotions, escape efforts, deaths, and seven possible endings.
- 03Webcam Observation
- Webcams show Quinn’s reactions and activities while away from the computer.
- 04Prison Puzzles
- Players directly control Quinn during puzzle sections inside his captivity.
- 05Replayable Story
- Different rooms, hidden details, and conversation paths reveal more of the narrative across multiple playthroughs.
STAY compared to similar games
STAY centers on real-time chat, branching conversations, webcam observation, and direct control during prison puzzles. Jusant instead focuses on climbing tools, stamina management, exploration, and environmental puzzles while ascending a tower. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition presents a broader role-playing adventure with story, characters, and exploration rather than STAY’s real-time captive-and-chat structure.
