Our take on Square Journey
Rather than treating failure as a final reset, the game frames death as part of gaining experience for each challenge. Its obstacle course is also paired with reflective dialogue before levels, departing from arcade games focused solely on action.
What is Square Journey?
Square Journey is a minimalist action game about guiding Square through the dungeons of his inner castle.
Each level presents hazards such as stakes, projectiles, flames, saws, stone balls and electrical discharges, requiring quick reactions, attention, timing and patience. Death does not end a run; it contributes to gaining experience for the challenge. Across 12 handcrafted stages, Square gains a brief invulnerability ability, while harder levels provide an item that slows time. Before each level, Square talks with his Self or Divine Consciousness in dialogue intended as a prompt for reflection. Players can choose from five soundtracks, including Mouth Music.
How Square Journey plays
- 01Temporary Invulnerability
- Square gains a short-lived defense ability as he progresses through the stages.
- 02Time-Slowing Item
- An item appears in more difficult stages and can slow the action when used.
- 03Soundtrack Selection
- Choose from five music options, including the comedic Mouth Music track.
- 04Pre-Level Dialogue
- Before each challenge, Square speaks with his Self or Divine Consciousness in reflective exchanges.
