Our take on Spellbound
The bounce point comes when physical VR movement becomes part of ordinary travel. Players sensitive to motion may experience brief nausea, while those expecting full traditional-monitor or mouse-and-keyboard support encounter limited options outside the main VR setups.
What is Spellbound?
Spellbound is a virtual reality game where players enter storybooks and take the role of a story's protagonist.
Its first story follows a lonely red wizard through a three-part tale, accompanied by a talking crow with a hidden identity. Spells are cast with hand movements: fireballs respond to throwing force, while the shape of a cone of cold depends on the distance between the hands. Elements can interact, such as grease becoming a wall of fire when ignited. Room-scale movement, body avatars, object collision, and arm-swing locomotion support physical play. Stories include magical pets, with the first featuring a crow. HTC Vive and Oculus Rift have full support; traditional monitors, mouse and keyboard, and gamepads have limited support.
How Spellbound plays
- 01Hand-Based Spellcasting
- Throwing force affects fireballs, while hand spacing changes the shape of the cold spell.
- 02Element Combinations
- Grease can slow characters and become a wall of fire or flame thrower after ignition.
- 03Room-Scale Movement
- Walking, ducking, and dodging in the play space are reflected by the character.
- 04Full-Body Avatars
- The player character is shown as a complete wizard rather than only floating hands and a head.
- 05Magical Pets
- Stories include interactive companions, including a crow in the first tale.
- 06VR Hardware Support
- HTC Vive and Oculus Rift have full support, while traditional monitors have limited support.
Spellbound compared to similar games
Ghost of a Tale focuses on stealth, disguises, conversations, and exploration as a mouse in a medieval animal world, while Spellbound centers on physical VR spellcasting and storybook roles. Vagante is a dark-fantasy adventure about dangerous lands populated by monsters, demons, and crooks, whereas Spellbound focuses on gesture-based magic and a three-part wizard story.
