Is Skylands worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Players who want open-ended survival and crafting on floating islands
- Small groups seeking cooperative exploration and base building
- Early-access testers willing to provide development feedback
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a finished, polished survival game may bounce off the explicitly early development version.
- Players who want a tightly directed campaign may hit a wall with the open-ended survival structure.
- Solo players looking for a purely social multiplayer experience may find the optional solo mode does not match that focus.
Our take on Skylands
The bounce point arrives before the survival systems have a chance to settle: players expecting the final game will encounter an explicitly early version instead. Those seeking structure may also stall once the open-ended island, crafting, and base-building loop becomes the main direction.
What is Skylands?
Skylands places players on an island in the sky and tasks them with staying alive.
The survival loop includes collecting materials, growing food, confronting hostile enemies, and finding additional islands. Players can craft items, weapons, and machines, then construct a base and expand their island toward new areas. Worlds are randomly generated and contain multiple thousand islands. Multiplayer allows friends to play together or lets unknown players join, while solo play is also available. The game is presented as a very early version intended for development feedback and ideas rather than as the final version.
How Skylands plays
- 01Randomized island worlds
- Each generated world contains multiple thousand islands for exploration.
- 02Crafting and machines
- Collected resources can be used to make items, weapons, and machines.
- 03Base construction
- Players can establish a base, enlarge their starting island, and extend toward other islands.
- 04Cooperative multiplayer
- Sessions support playing with friends or allowing unknown participants to join.
- 05Enemy survival
- Hostile creatures must be fought while players manage survival on the islands.
Skylands compared to similar games
Skylands combines survival, resource gathering, food cultivation, crafting, construction, enemy combat, and exploration across randomly generated floating islands, with solo and multiplayer play. Mr. Prepper also focuses on survival crafting, but its description centers on preparing for nuclear war, building an underground shelter, and dealing with an authoritarian government.
