Our take on Shadowgate
The defining structure is its four-tier difficulty system, which changes puzzle design rather than only adjusting a basic challenge setting.
What is Shadowgate?
Shadowgate is a point-and-click adventure set inside a living castle, where players take the role of the Seed of Prophecy and seek the Warlock Lord.
Progress involves exploring illustrated rooms, interacting with objects, using an inventory and map, and solving new and revised puzzles. Four difficulty settings alter the gameplay and puzzle structure. Ironman mode removes saving and requires completing the game in one attempt. Players can choose wheel-based commands, classic on-screen commands, or an Immersive mode that hides interface elements. Retro Mode adds pixel graphics, NES-style music, room transitions, and text presentation. The game also includes a Dread Pumpkin mini-quest, cut-scenes, a dynamic soundtrack, and hundreds of sound effects.
How Shadowgate plays
- 01Multiple Command Styles
- The interface supports wheel-based actions, classic commands, and a mode that hides the interface while using customizable hotkeys.
- 02Variable Puzzle Difficulty
- Four settings change both the gameplay experience and the structure of the puzzles.
- 03Ironman Challenge
- This mode disables saving and requires a complete run in one attempt.
- 04Retro Presentation
- Optional pixel visuals, NES chip music, room transitions, and retro text recreate the older presentation.
- 05Dread Pumpkin Quest
- A separate mini-quest involves finding and freeing the Dread Pumpkin.
- 06Castle Exploration
- The game includes new and familiar locations, an inventory, and a mapping system for navigating its illustrated rooms.
