What is Scarlet Idol?
Scarlet Idol is a 3D horror puzzle adventure drawing on folk traditions from China’s Wu-Yue and Zhejiang regions.
Its story follows Qi Ning, an abandoned infant who returns to reclaim foster brother Qi Yu from abusive villagers; neither sibling escapes. In two-player mode, each player explores a different spatially divided environment. They collect separate clues, solve puzzles in their own areas, and coordinate progress while uncovering the story. The game incorporates funeral customs, ghost and Mulian opera, and the duomin communities. Its settings are based on researched ancient stages in Zhejiang, including water-town architecture and the “Wan Nian Tai” stage form. Audio draws on Taoist traditions. Co-op servers currently support China, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao.
