Play it if you…
Good fit- Metroidvania fans who want exploration tied to new movement abilities
- Action players who enjoy crafting gear from enemy materials
- Players seeking boss fights and combat across colony and space environments
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want a straightforward level sequence may hit a wall when exploration requires returning with newly gained abilities.
- Players who prefer brief, low-pressure encounters may bounce off the large bosses' sustained attacks.
- Players looking for a purely grounded combat system may not enjoy the shift to zero-gravity battles.
- Players seeking a non-action game may not fit the combat-focused structure.
Our take on ROLLING STAR
Players who are comfortable with ordinary colony traversal may bounce when progress begins depending on newly acquired skills and equipment. A second hurdle arrives with the vehicle, which changes the combat context by opening outer-space exploration and zero-gravity encounters.
What is ROLLING STAR?
ROLLING STAR is a Metroidvania action game set in 2301, after an alien assault sends Laurie’s space pod crashing into Colony 102.
Exploration of the colony gradually opens through newly acquired skills and equipment, eventually allowing movement through the vacuum of space. Enemies drop materials that can be used to create equipment and combine with skills for a customized combat setup. Large bosses occupy much of the screen while attacking Laurie. After obtaining a vehicle, Laurie can leave the colony to search outer space for treasures and use a different, zero-gravity combat style. The vehicle is also usable within the colony.
How ROLLING STAR plays
- 01Ability-Gated Exploration
- New skills and equipment open routes through the colony and later enable travel through space.
- 02Equipment Crafting
- Materials dropped by defeated enemies can be turned into gear and paired with skills.
- 03Large Boss Battles
- Bosses fill most of the screen and attack with sustained, severe patterns.
- 04Space Vehicle
- A vehicle provides access to outer-space exploration and can also be driven inside the colony.
- 05Zero-Gravity Combat
- Outer-space encounters use a combat style that operates without normal gravity.
ROLLING STAR compared to similar games
Sundered: Eldritch Edition is the closest listed alternative because it is also a Metroidvania, while ROLLING STAR combines ability-based exploration with equipment crafting, large bosses, a usable vehicle, and outer-space combat. The other listed games focus on climbing, third-person shooting, running and shooting, or multiplayer roguelite shooting rather than this colony-and-space Metroidvania structure.
