Our take on Rocket Knight
The focus on compact side-scrolling action gives up broader exploration and role-playing systems. Movement abilities such as hovering, wall ricochets, drilling, and rail sliding define the play space, leaving less room for open-ended traversal or character development.
What is Rocket Knight?
Rocket Knight follows Sparkster, an opossum hero returning to the kingdom of Zephyrus after 15 years to confront a wolf army.
The side-scrolling action platformer includes four worlds with large platforming stages and rocket-flying sections. Sparkster can rebound from walls, hover briefly, redirect enemy bombs with a Burst Vortex, and fire sword projectiles at distant enemies. A rocket drill breaks through weak walls to open alternate routes, while his tail allows him to hang from and slide along rails. Players also navigate obstacles and enemies using the rocket pack, then compare scores through leaderboards.
How Rocket Knight plays
- 01Rocket Movement
- Sparkster can bounce through hazards, hover during airborne movement, and fly through dedicated rocket stages.
- 02Burst Abilities
- The character can send bombs back toward enemies and fire ranged attacks from his sword.
- 03Breakable Routes
- Rocket-drilling through fragile walls creates additional passageways through the levels.
- 04Rail Traversal
- Sparkster can attach to rails with his tail and slide along them.
- 05Score Leaderboards
- Completed runs can be compared through high-score leaderboards.
Rocket Knight compared to similar games
Rocket Knight centers on side-scrolling platforming, rocket movement, combat abilities, and four worlds with flying stages. Sundered: Eldritch Edition is described as a chaotic metroidvania, indicating a broader exploration structure than Rocket Knight's level-based action platforming.
