Our take on Retrace
Death functions as a source of progress: each fatal attempt gives Freya information for testing another route through the hostile dimension.
What is Retrace?
Retrace follows Freya after a ghost tour leads her and her friends into a hostile parallel dimension.
Death resets the journey while granting knowledge that can reveal shortcuts, patterns, clues, and new routes. Progress involves exploring a 2D environment, solving logic puzzles in locked rooms, surviving action sequences, and uncovering secrets. Freya’s choices also affect her relationships with Mia, her longtime crush, and Claire, a prisoner who sees Freya as her saviour. The game combines pixel art with painted portraits and presents a mystery adventure involving queer romance. Its structure links failure to progression: each death provides information for another attempt at escaping the dimension.
How Retrace plays
- 01Death-Based Progression
- Dying provides knowledge that can be applied to later attempts, including route discoveries, shortcuts, and pattern recognition.
- 02Logic Room Puzzles
- Locked areas require Freya to solve puzzles, with incorrect answers carrying unpleasant consequences.
- 03Relationship Choices
- Decisions influence Freya’s connections with Mia and Claire as well as her chances of survival.
- 04Mixed Visual Presentation
- The 2D world combines pixel-art environments with painted character portraits.
Retrace compared to similar games
Retrace combines logic-room puzzles, action sequences, mystery, and relationship choices, while Jusant centers on climbing, stamina management, exploration, and uncovering the history of a tower. The two games both present exploratory action-puzzle adventures, but Retrace uses death and rewinding as its central progression structure, whereas Jusant emphasizes climbing tools and route selection.
