Our take on Reignfall
Combining city building, army command, and direct hero combat creates a broader control burden than a focused strategy or action game. Attention must shift between production chains, defenses, troop positioning, and battlefield fighting rather than staying within one system.
What is Reignfall?
Reignfall combines real-time strategy, city building, and third-person combat in a medieval fantasy setting invaded by undead.
Players develop a city through resource production chains, strengthen defenses, raise armies, and protect a keep from increasingly difficult enemy waves. Troops can be directed through traditional overhead RTS controls, while the lord or one of six heroes can be controlled directly in third-person battles alongside allied forces. Each hero has a distinct playstyle. Procedurally generated maps vary each playthrough, and Battle Tester mode allows units to be placed freely to simulate battles.
How Reignfall plays
- 01Resource production
- City development uses linked production chains modeled on classical city-building games.
- 02Dual combat control
- Players can direct armies from an overhead view or control a hero directly during battles.
- 03Six distinct heroes
- The lord and six heroes provide different ways to approach combat.
- 04Generated battlefields
- Maps are procedurally created so successive playthroughs use different layouts.
- 05Battle Tester mode
- A separate mode lets players position units freely and run simulated battles.
Reignfall compared to similar games
Dungeon Defenders: Awakened combines cooperative action RPG and tower defense with loot, leveling, pets, and character customization, while Reignfall centers on city development, army command, and direct control of heroes. Anomaly: Warzone Earth also mixes action and strategy, but uses a reversed tower-defense structure against an alien invasion; Reignfall instead builds defenses and armies against undead waves.
