Is Re:BF worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- JRPG fans who want individual enemy battles instead of group encounters
- Players who enjoy experimenting with character builds and captured monster abilities
- Adventure players who want quests and secrets spread across towns and dungeons
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking large-scale party battles may find the one-enemy-at-a-time combat restrictive
- Players wanting a tightly linear adventure may find the quests, secrets, and build options distracting
- Players looking primarily for stealth or prison-escape gameplay will find its focus elsewhere
Our take on Re:BF
The focus on one-on-one encounters gives battles room for distinct enemy tactics, but it limits combat scale. The build system and monster capture add variety to a single-adventurer structure rather than supporting a larger party-management format.
What is Re:BF?
Re:BF is a JRPG about Venos, an apprentice adventurer defending the continent of Garzholm as new monsters appear and prepare for war.
Combat uses one-on-one encounters with animated enemies, each requiring different tactics and abilities. Quests range from gathering ingredients to assisting nobles, with hidden tasks and secrets spread across towns and dungeons. Players allocate stat points, develop skills, equip gear, and choose among tank, mage, or warrior-style builds. Monsters encountered in the world can also be captured, brought into combat, and used to learn additional skills. The game includes human and monster characters, multiple locations to explore, and a developing conflict involving Venos’s family and the leadership of Prontemple.
How Re:BF plays
- 01One-on-one battles
- Encounters pit Venos against individual enemies whose abilities call for different tactics.
- 02Build customization
- Stat allocation and a skill tree support defensive, evasive, magical, and balanced character setups.
- 03Monster capture
- Creatures found while exploring can join combat and provide additional skills to learn.
- 04Quest exploration
- Towns and dungeons contain missions, hidden tasks, clues, and secrets beyond the main conflict.
Re:BF compared to similar games
Re:BF centers on animated one-on-one monster battles, character builds, monster capture, and quests across towns and dungeons. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition emphasizes an unconventional story, characters, and exploration, while Back to the Dawn focuses on surviving and escaping a prison through investigation and conflict. Ghost of a Tale combines action-RPG play with stealth, disguises, conversations, and exploration in an animal-populated medieval world.
