Our take on Pyrene
Rather than keeping deck adjustments between runs, Pyrene lets players switch cards between enemy encounters during an expedition. Its between-run village restoration also ties progression to repairing buildings, alongside the dungeon-crawling and deck-building structure.
What is Pyrene?
Pyrene is a roguelike dungeon crawler built around deck-based combat.
Choose from village heroes with distinct abilities, then use spells, items, and cards to fight monsters across biomes with different creatures and terrain effects. More than 200 relics and over 100 cards can be unlocked, and the deck can be changed between enemy encounters. Each expedition also involves choosing how to use collected items and tailoring a strategy to the selected hero. Between runs, return to the village to repair buildings, which unlock upgrades for items and spells. The story draws on Basque mythology and follows the aftermath of the village’s destruction. The game also includes endless modes.

Shogun Showdown also combines rogue-like progression and deck-building, but its description centers on turn-based positioning and upgrading attack tiles before facing the Shogun. Pyrene instead pairs dungeon expeditions with hero-specific decks, card changes between encounters, and village restoration between runs.
