Our take on Protolife
The presentation highlights construction freedom and mission variety, while the control limitation receives less attention: mouse input was not part of the game's design. Direct control is centered on builder robots rather than conventional unit command.
What is Protolife?
Protolife is a strategy title centered on protecting human settlements from an advancing lifeform.
Players place individual blocks to assemble, improve, merge, and reposition defensive towers while balancing room and materials. The enemy spreads over the map, gains strength with each area claimed, and launches assaults after nightfall. Builders can be taken under direct control, with switching between multiple fronts. More than 30 stages offer different goals, alongside procedurally generated missions with selectable difficulty and bonus rewards. A tower editor supports custom weapon designs. Defenses may be torn down and reconstructed elsewhere, enabling rapid low-level deployments or heavily protected artillery sites. Keyboard and controller bindings are configurable; mouse input is not the intended control method.
How Protolife plays
- 01Block-Based Construction
- Players assemble towers from individual blocks, then upgrade and combine them while managing space and resources.
- 02Redeployable Defenses
- Built structures can be collected and reconstructed in another location during play.
- 03Expanding Organism
- The opposing lifeform occupies territory and gains strength as its presence spreads.
- 04Builder Robot Control
- Players can switch direct control between multiple builder robots at different battlefronts.
- 05Varied Objectives
- More than 30 levels offer different victory conditions, while generated missions include adjustable difficulty and special rewards.
- 06Custom Tower Editor
- A dedicated editor lets players construct their own towers.
Protolife compared to similar games
Protolife centers on constructing and relocating block-based defenses against an expanding organism, with direct control of builder robots. Men of War: Assault Squad focuses on commanding individual units in large-scale World War II battles with hands-on combat. Xenonauts uses turn-based small-squad operations to defend Cold War-era Earth from extraterrestrials, rather than tower construction and nighttime defensive waves.
