Is Privateers worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Roguelite players who want permanent consequences and a single-save structure
- Strategy RPG fans who prefer pausable combat with crew commands
- Fantasy nautical adventure fans who want branching privateer and pirate roles
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a forgiving campaign with reloadable saves may find permanent death too restrictive
- Players wanting uninterrupted real-time combat may dislike pausing to assess situations and direct the crew
- Players looking for a linear story may find the choice-driven island exploration too open-ended
Our take on Privateers
Rather than treating a nautical adventure as a fixed heroic voyage, the game makes identity a player-controlled outcome. Its roguelite structure pairs exploration and faction encounters with irreversible decisions, while pausing during combat replaces purely real-time command with deliberate tactical intervention.
What is Privateers?
Privateers is a fantasy seafaring roguelite.
Across an island chain, players build a crew whose members have different skills, meet varied factions and peoples, and take on island missions and adventures. Their decisions shape a path toward either a celebrated naval captain or a notorious pirate ruler. Combat can be paused so players can review the situation and direct the crew, including coordinating members’ abilities. Exploring yields equipment and loot that can support different play styles. Death is permanent, and the single-save structure means players cannot return to an earlier point after a choice or encounter.
How Privateers plays
- 01Crew-based combat
- Pause encounters to direct crew abilities and issue tactical commands.
- 02Moral career paths
- Choices shape a career as either a heroic privateer or a pirate leader.
- 03Fantasy archipelago
- Travel among islands, meet varied factions and races, and undertake local adventures.
- 04Permanent consequences
- A single save and irreversible death give decisions and encounters lasting consequences.
- 05Equippable loot
- Collected equipment can open different ways to approach play.
Privateers compared to similar games
Privateers combines roguelite structure, fantasy seafaring, crew-command combat, and a choice between privateer and pirate roles. Quasimorph is also a high-stakes roguelike, but centers on cyberpunk contracts, cosmic body horror, and extracting resources to strengthen a PMC.
