Our take on Planetary Settlers
The educational and experimental structure trades away a tightly focused gameplay loop: exploration, quizzes, puzzles, minigames, and ability upgrades share space instead of supporting one central activity. Its in-development status also leaves the experience subject to ongoing additions and changes.
What is Planetary Settlers?
Planetary Settlers is a solo educational exploration game set in a possible 2142 future.
Players control Blue 42, an advanced AI robot, across levels for Mercury, Venus, Earth, the Moon, Mars, the Sun, Jupiter, and Pluto. The game combines planetary exploration with minigames, secrets, puzzles, and quizzes about the solar system and science. Gravity affects actions such as jumping, throwing rocks, and flying. Blue 42 can use environmental shielding, adjustable lights, a gravity probe, treads, a tread jumper, a jetpack, and a grabber beam. Nanites can enhance several abilities. The game is in development and currently targets Windows PCs and laptops, with other languages and platforms planned.
How Planetary Settlers plays
- 01Planetary Gravity
- Jumps, thrown objects, and flight respond to the gravity of each planet or moon.
- 02Robot Movement Tools
- Blue 42 uses treads, a boosted jumping mechanism, and a jetpack to travel across planetary surfaces and through the air.
- 03Environmental Protection
- Shielding technologies cover hazards including extreme temperatures, pressure changes, corrosive chemicals, radiation, and harmful dust.
- 04Gravity Probe
- A customizable projectile generator lets players observe gravity effects and increase projectile velocity with nanites.
- 05Grabber Beam
- The beam can hold and release large objects, including objects thrown after movement or rotation.
- 06Science Activities
- Exploration is combined with minigames, puzzles, secrets, and quizzes about the solar system.
