Our take on Pathogenic
The focus on run-based combat and build assembly leaves less room for a fixed, story-led campaign. Permanent upgrades add continuity between attempts, but the core structure still centers on repeating procedurally generated runs rather than a single linear journey.
What is Pathogenic?
Pathogenic is a 2D roguelike twin-stick shooter in which a lone parasite attacks a human host and battles its immune system.
Runs involve hunting enemy cells, taking their organelles, and attaching those parts to shape movement, ranged attacks, melee attacks, and other abilities. Enemy groups include macrophages, T cells, tapeworms, and protozoa, with bosses located deeper inside the host. Plasmid fragments provide permanent upgrades between runs through parasite-specific upgrade trees. The procedurally generated body contains areas based on the lungs, heart, and brain. Soft-body physics governs cells, enemies, and projectiles, while handcrafted elements are combined with procedural generation for changing run layouts and encounters.
How Pathogenic plays
- 01Organelle Builds
- Combine movement, power, ranged-attack, and melee parts to create different parasite configurations.
- 02Immune System Battles
- Encounters include macrophages, T cells, rival parasites, and bosses found within the host's organs.
- 03Permanent Upgrades
- Plasmid fragments unlock lasting improvements through an upgrade tree assigned to each parasite.
- 04Generated Body Regions
- Runs move through changing organic environments modeled on the lungs, heart, and brain.
- 05Soft-Body Physics
- Cells, opponents, and projectiles use a physics simulation that gives them deformable, organic motion.
Pathogenic compared to similar games
Pathogenic centers on 2D twin-stick shooting, parasite customization through organelles, and repeated runs through generated body regions. SULFUR also combines combat with build creation, but its description focuses on weapons, gear, tools, enchantments, planning, and progression through a world of dark creatures rather than cellular combat and parasite evolution.
