Our take on Paper Beast
The store presentation foregrounds a mysterious wildlife adventure, but the game also devotes a full mode to sandbox experimentation. That makes it less a purely directed puzzle journey than the premise may initially suggest, with terrain manipulation and ecosystem play forming a substantial part of the experience.
What is Paper Beast?
Paper Beast is an exploration and adventure game set in a dreamlike ecosystem hidden within the internet.
As the first human to enter this world, players investigate a force disrupting its balance and work with unusual creatures whose behavior changes in response to player actions. Environmental puzzles use physics and manipulation of the surroundings: rivers can be redirected, ice melted, and storms endured. The game has two modes. The adventure mode focuses on exploring the ecosystem and solving puzzles, while the sandbox provides an open-ended space for changing terrain, forming lakes, introducing creatures, and triggering tornadoes. The soundtrack combines Japanese punk rock with ambient music.
How Paper Beast plays
- 01Two game modes
- Adventure provides a puzzle-focused journey, while sandbox offers an open-ended environment for experimentation.
- 02Reactive creatures
- Animal behavior changes according to how the player interacts with them.
- 03Environmental physics
- Players manipulate water, ice, weather, and terrain to address environmental puzzles.
- 04Terraforming sandbox
- The sandbox allows mountains, lakes, ecosystems, and tornadoes to be created or altered.
- 05Mixed soundtrack
- Music combines Japanese punk rock performed by TsuShiMaMire with ambient work by Roly Porter.
Paper Beast compared to similar games
Paper Beast combines environmental puzzles, creature interaction, and a terrain-focused sandbox. Exo One instead centers on traversing space with an alien craft, while Mr. Prepper focuses on shelter construction and survival crafting rather than ecosystem exploration.
