Our take on Ominous
Co-op horror usually keeps teammates together on a shared, visible map. This game separates them into different dimensions, making reunion part of the challenge while the creature can see everyone. Procedural maps and a variable warning time further shift the structure between sessions.
What is Ominous?
Ominous is a thriller-horror game for up to four players.
Teams explore a hotel and alternate dimensions while trying to close an interdimensional portal. Players have no weapons and must rely on exploration, puzzle-solving, and stealth while avoiding a creature. Although teammates share the same map, they exist in separate dimensions and cannot see one another until they find a way to reunite. Dimensional rifts can transport players to different environments, where escape requires solving a puzzle or dying.
Some rifts lead to a poker table, where winning grants a prize. Each game uses a procedurally generated map. A warning sound plays across the map five minutes before the portal explodes; that warning may occur between 15 and 30 minutes after the game begins.
How Ominous plays
- 01Separated Dimensions
- Teammates share a map but cannot see one another while they occupy different dimensions.
- 02Creature Pursuit
- The creature can see all players, including those in dimensions where teammates cannot see each other.
- 03Dimensional Rifts
- Rifts can move players to different environments containing puzzles or a poker-table encounter.
- 04Procedural Maps
- The map is generated anew for each game.
