Our take on Octo's Balloon Challenge
The premise and balloon controls receive most of the attention, while the overall structure is a compact score run with strict failure thresholds. The addition of offline co-op broadens the format, but it remains centered on the same balancing task rather than a larger adventure.
What is Octo's Balloon Challenge?
Octo's Balloon Challenge is a score-focused mini-game spun off from Goonya Monster.
Souls fall from above, and players move left or right while placing balloons to keep a container balanced and airborne. Balloon size and position affect the container’s tilt; leaning too far causes collected Souls to fall. Groups of 10 Souls become boxes, while combining three boxes clears them and grants a score bonus. The run ends after missing 7 Souls or descending more than 500 meters. An offline two-player mode adds Orca and makes the container shift continuously from side to side. Two controllers are required for this mode.
How Octo's Balloon Challenge plays
- 01Balloon balancing
- Balloon size and placement determine how the container tilts while it rises.
- 02Soul grouping
- Every 10 collected Souls form a box, and three boxes can be combined for a score bonus.
- 03Run limits
- A session ends after 7 missed Souls or a descent exceeding 500 meters.
- 04Offline co-op
- Two players can work together with Orca in a mode that requires two controllers.
