Our take on Nerobi
Rather than making combat the constant activity of an action platformer, Nerobi withholds fighting for much of the adventure. Progress centers on movement, puzzles, exploration, recovered memories, and newly gained powers, with demon battles appearing only at specific moments.
What is Nerobi?
Nerobi is a narrative platform game about a warrior spirit who has lost his memories and powers after an epic battle.
Explore the Middle World, solve puzzles and riddles, jump across hazards, and discover a path toward reincarnation and the future of four worlds. New abilities and memories gradually expand the gameplay and open previously inaccessible areas. Combat is limited for much of the adventure, with demon encounters creating occasional opportunities to fight. The hand-drawn world contains strange characters, ruins that reveal the game’s lore, and collectible cards with information about its characters. An emotional soundtrack accompanies the journey.
How Nerobi plays
- 01Narrative platforming
- The journey combines jumping, obstacle avoidance, puzzles, and riddles across the Middle World.
- 02Ability progression
- Recovered powers and memories add to the gameplay and provide access to new areas.
- 03Limited combat
- Nerobi cannot fight for most of the adventure, but demon encounters allow him to attack.
- 04Lore collectibles
- Ruins reconstruct the game’s lore, while cards provide details about its characters.
- 05Frame-by-frame art
- The setting and its characters use hand-drawn animation created frame by frame.
Nerobi compared to similar games
Nerobi combines narrative platforming, riddles, collectible lore, and limited combat, while Jusant focuses on climbing tools, stamina management, multiple routes, and a meditative ascent. Sundered: Eldritch Edition is described as a chaotic metroidvania, whereas Nerobi emphasizes hand-drawn exploration, memory recovery, puzzles, and combat that is unavailable for much of the adventure.
