Our take on Nearly Dead
Rather than focusing only on fighting through an apocalypse, the game combines real-time combat with settlement management, farming, layered clothing, and an expanding world. Its visibility system also makes darkness and unseen corners part of ordinary travel, not just combat arenas.
What is Nearly Dead?
Nearly Dead is a 2D open-world survival game set after demons from another dimension turn much of humanity into zombies and other inhuman creatures.
Real-time battles use line-of-sight and visibility mechanics, making darkness, corners, and threats behind the character part of exploration. Survival involves gathering other survivors, establishing a settlement, constructing an apocalypse truck, crafting supplies, farming, and managing food. The early access version controls one player character, with NPC companions planned by the vendor. Characters can use layered equipment, wield weapons in both hands, and recolor individual items. The world expands through randomly generated regions connected without separate loading screens. The game also supports mods for item values, images, terrain, and animations through JSON editing.
How Nearly Dead plays
- 01Settlement Survival
- Players can recruit survivors, establish a base, build an apocalypse truck, craft supplies, and grow food through farming.
- 02Visibility Mechanics
- Line of sight makes darkness, corners, and unseen areas relevant during exploration and combat.
- 03Layered Equipment
- Clothing and armor can be combined across body parts, with individual item colors available for customization.
- 04Dual-Wielded Weapons
- The character can equip weapons in both hands, including combinations of firearms and larger weapons.
- 05Expanding World
- Randomly generated regions connect into an ever-growing world without separate loading screens.
- 06JSON Modding
- Mods can alter item performance, artwork, terrain, and animation clips through a JSON editor.
Nearly Dead compared to similar games
Dig or Die also combines survival, combat, crafting, and construction, but its description centers on defending structures from nightly attacks and managing physics-based building. Nearly Dead instead adds settlement growth, farming, visibility mechanics, randomly connected expansion, and JSON-based modding. Quasimorph focuses on high-stakes roguelike missions, corporate contracts, and extraction, while Nearly Dead centers on continuous open-world survival.
