Our take on Monsters and Weapons
Its focus on decisions, inventory choices, and controlled combat pacing leaves less room for broad exploration or a story-heavy structure. The run-based format also places repeated strategic planning ahead of long-form character development.
What is Monsters and Weapons?
Monsters and Weapons is a strategy roguelike built around choices and resource use.
Players fight through three areas as one of ten classes, purchasing items and managing an inventory before facing bosses and a final enemy. Battles use a partly turn-based format in which players control the pace of encounters. Runs include luck, difficult achievements, varied equipment, and item combinations that affect decisions. Ten classes can be unlocked, while Legendary Mode adds a more demanding challenge. Victory comes from defeating the final boss after managing purchases, resources, combat choices, and equipment across the run.
How Monsters and Weapons plays
- 01Ten Unlockable Classes
- Each run can use one of ten distinct classes, which become available through unlocking.
- 02Paced Turn-Based Combat
- Encounters combine turn-based actions with player control over the speed of combat.
- 03Resource Management
- Purchases and other resource decisions affect progress through the areas.
- 04Item Combinations
- A range of items can be combined in different ways during a run.
- 05Legendary Mode
- An unlockable mode adds a higher level of challenge after it becomes available.

Shogun Showdown also uses roguelike, turn-based combat, but centers on positioning, attack tiles, skills, and deck construction before confronting the Shogun. Monsters and Weapons instead emphasizes class selection, shopping, inventory use, resource management, and item combinations across three areas. Xenonauts focuses on commanding persistent soldiers in a Cold War alien-defense campaign, rather than individual class-based runs.
