Our take on Merge & Blade
Puzzle-focused players may hit a wall when unit placement, attack ranges, healing ranges, and swaps begin determining battle results. Players seeking a short, self-contained campaign may also bounce after the castle-reclaiming sequence gives way to endless invasions and additional challenge modes.
What is Merge & Blade?
Merge & Blade combines falling-block puzzles with squad-based auto-battles.
During puzzle turns, matching at least three identical units creates stronger units, while multi-merges and combos can add turns or improve the squad. Battles run in real time with teams of up to 25 units per side. Positioning matters because units have different attack or healing ranges and attack types; swaps can alter their placement. Gold from puzzles and battles upgrades the base and squad, including unit health and attack. The campaign involves reclaiming castles, followed by endless monster attacks. Other activities include local multiplayer through Steam Remote Play, challenge play, defense scoring, roguelike modes, a 100-stage roguelite mode, and real-time suppression battles.
