Our take on Mechanism
Rather than following a conventional adventure structure focused only on a sequence of puzzles, Mechanism makes world changes depend on player actions and uses contamination as a game mechanic. Its visual storytelling also places a hidden meta-narrative beneath the apparent robot-and-disease story.
What is Mechanism?
Mechanism is an adventure game about a solitary robot in a steampunk world affected by a disease called Flegma.
The robot explores locations, searches their hidden corners, and uses objects to solve riddles while dealing with contamination, which can harm robots. Player actions change the world, and choices determine what happens to it. The story is told through visuals, with a concealed meta-narrative beneath the central account of robots and disease. The vendor compares its exploration to the Souls game series. One person, Alexander Khoroshavin, created the game with support from family and friends.
How Mechanism plays
- 01Choice-driven world
- Player decisions change the game world and help determine what happens to it.
- 02Object-based riddles
- Various objects are used to solve puzzles during exploration.
- 03Contamination mechanics
- The character's contamination level is part of the game mechanics, and the disease can harm robots.
- 04Hidden narrative layer
- A meta-narrative sits beneath the main story about robots and disease.
