Our take on Mark of the Deep
The game combines Metroidvania-style exploration with Souls-like combat rather than relying on just one of those structures. Its narrative also gives quests and choices involving allies a role in the possible endings, while The Cursed Trials DLC shifts focus to repeated boss encounters.
What is Mark of the Deep?
Mark of the Deep follows pirate Marcus “Rookie” Ramsey after a shipwreck leaves him on a cursed island.
Explore eerie areas, face abyssal monsters, undead creatures, cultists, and other dangers, and search for the missing crew known as the Angry Mermaids. Combat is inspired by Souls-like games, with more than 80 enemies and 16 bosses. Rookie can unlock abilities that change how he fights and explores, and find skills, weapons, and trinkets to develop his combat options and reach new areas.
The fully voiced cast includes pirates, abyssal creatures, and other characters on the island. Quests and difficult choices involving allies lead to multiple endings. The Cursed Trials DLC adds a boss-rush mode with handcrafted sequences, escalating difficulty, build changes between encounters, Curses, and cosmetic unlocks.
