Play it if you…
Good fit- Strategy players who want to plan production around changing mission objectives
- Simulation fans who enjoy managing resources and worker numbers
- Players interested in fantasy settings who prefer economic challenges over combat
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking combat encounters will hit a wall because there are no enemies to fight.
- Players who want to build one continuously expanding mega-factory may find the mission-by-mission structure limiting.
- Players who dislike manually directing road-based resource transport may find that system demanding.
- Players looking for hundreds of hours of content may find the 12 missions too limited.
Our take on Malmyr
Players who expect to set up transport once and leave it alone may hit a wall when production needs change: roads are managed manually, and some missions require selling buildings and rebuilding elsewhere. The mission structure also replaces a single factory that grows without end.
What is Malmyr?
Malmyr is a story-based strategy game about building and maintaining production chains across 12 missions.
Each mission sets a different task and hazards, and players direct resources, provide enough workers, and adjust production as requirements change. Roads must be managed piece by piece to move resources between buildings. The game includes over 45 resources and more than 70 buildings, along with 12 magical runes used for terraforming, creating resources, or gaining permanent global bonuses. Three runes can be combined into one of 18 runewords, and spare runes can be crafted into other runes. There is no combat against enemies; the mission itself provides the challenge. The game focuses on completing each regional task rather than expanding one factory indefinitely.
How Malmyr plays
- 01Manual road management
- Resource transport requires managing individual road sections rather than relying on set routes or conveyor belts.
- 02Rune combinations
- Combining three runes creates one of 18 runewords with different effects.
- 03Mission-based production
- New regions bring different objectives, and some tasks require selling and relocating buildings.
