Our take on Ironclads 2: Boshin War
Players who want a single, uninterrupted combat format may hit a wall when the campaign’s turn-based decisions give way to real-time battle management. The shift asks for both strategic fleet planning and tactical control of squadron formations, so a preference for only one layer may make the structure feel divided.
What is Ironclads 2: Boshin War?
Ironclads 2: Boshin War combines a turn-based maritime strategy campaign with real-time tactical naval battles set during Japan’s 1868–1869 Boshin War.
In the campaign, players build fleets and armies, pursue enemy ships, shelter weaker squadrons in ports while reinforcements arrive, blockade trade routes, and conduct amphibious assaults and harbour sieges. During battles, players arrange squadrons and formations and manage engagements using ships with distinct models and characteristics, alongside ballistics and weapon systems. Crews gain experience as their ships operate at sea. The setting centers on the conflict between Tokugawa forces and pro-imperial forces, including the campaign toward Kyoto and the regrouping at Osaka Castle.
