OtherIs HyperRogue worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Roguelike players who want unusual geometry to shape movement and exploration
- Puzzle-game fans who enjoy spatial rules that differ from standard grids
- Explorers who prefer optional objectives and multiple experimental modes
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking conventional maps and familiar Euclidean movement may find the geometry disorienting.
- Players wanting a tightly scripted adventure may not enjoy the large, exploratory structure and optional main objective.
- Players looking for a conventional real-time action game may find the original turn-based mode too slow-paced.
Our take on HyperRogue
Instead of using a familiar flat map, the game makes hyperbolic geometry its central structure. Movement changes the shape and apparent relationships of the world, while the enormous space replaces the compact layouts common in many exploration and puzzle games.
What is HyperRogue?
HyperRogue is a turn-based roguetime game set on a hyperbolic plane, where the world changes when the adventurer moves.
Explore around 60 lands, each presenting distinct treasures, enemies, and terrain hazards. The main goal is to obtain an Orb of Yendor, though smaller treasures can be collected instead. Its geometry uses hexagons and heptagons, diverging paths, and triangles with angles totaling less than 180 degrees. The world is extremely large, with centillions of locations within 700 steps of the start. Additional modes include racing, real-time shooting, 3D geometries such as Thurston geometries, SteamVR virtual reality, and a first-person shooter mode.
How HyperRogue plays
- 01Hyperbolic World
- The game uses non-Euclidean geometry where paths can diverge and returning to a previous location is highly unlikely.
- 02Multiple Lands
- Around 60 regions contain different treasure types, enemies, and terrain obstacles.
- 03Orb Quest
- Collecting an Orb of Yendor completes the main quest, while smaller treasures offer an alternative objective.
- 04Experimental Modes
- Optional modes include racing, real-time shooting, 3D geometries, SteamVR virtual reality, and first-person shooting.
