Our take on HOST
The focus on sensory discovery removes familiar guidance tools: there is no UI, voice-over, or controller-button interaction. This makes observation and physical engagement central, but limits the game for players who prefer explicit instructions or conventional interfaces.
What is HOST?
After a spacecraft lands disastrously on an unfamiliar world, HOST sends players into shadowy passageways and strange chambers where environmental clues guide puzzle solving.
Players examine visual, auditory, and physical sensations, make contact with luminous objects, activate entrances, and travel downward through successive regions. The central mystery concerns the host’s identity and the player’s connection to the surrounding place. There is no interface, spoken narration, or controller-button input; actions are performed with the hands. Voice-created soundscapes and subdued imagery establish the atmosphere. The virtual setting remains within the player’s real surroundings. Flashing imagery is included and may present risks for people whose epilepsy or other conditions are triggered by light.
How HOST plays
- 01Environmental puzzles
- Players interpret sights, sounds, sensations, and other details in the alien surroundings to progress.
- 02Hand-based interaction
- Interactions include touching a green glow and opening gateways without pressing controller buttons.
- 03Layered exploration
- Players enter new rooms and descend farther into the setting as they continue.
- 04No interface
- The game presents its puzzles and world without a UI or voice-over.
- 05Voice-made audio
- The atmospheric audio is created solely with voice work.
HOST compared to similar games
HOST centers on virtual-reality environmental puzzles, sensory clues, and hand-based interaction. Jusant combines action-puzzle climbing with climbing tools, a stamina meter, different paths, and exploration toward the top of a tall tower. The two share exploration and puzzle elements but use different movement and progression systems.
