Our take on HopBound
Rather than escalating a sequel with a larger world or greater spectacle, the game turns inward toward one character's fractured mind. Its horror structure also departs from a single platforming format by inserting endless runner levels into the narrative journey.
What is HopBound?
HopBound follows Mayumi, a recluse traveling through a surreal retro game while confronting disturbing memories.
Its structure combines 16-bit horror platforming stages with endless runner levels, using pixel art and ambient music to create a dreamlike, unsettling atmosphere. The game uses visuals built mostly from a four-color palette inspired by 1990s handheld games. It continues the story of DERE EVIL . EXE two years later, but can be played without that earlier game. Returning enemies appear in altered forms. Rather than expanding the sequel's scale, the story turns inward around Mayumi's mind. HopBound does not support controllers, and the vendor warns that connected controllers can cause movement problems.
How HopBound plays
- 01Platforming and Running
- The campaign alternates between 16-bit horror platform stages and endless runner sections.
- 02Four-Color Visuals
- Most scenes use a limited four-color palette modeled after 1990s handheld games.
- 03Standalone Continuation
- The story takes place two years after DERE EVIL .EXE but does not require prior play of that title.
- 04Altered Returning Enemies
- Creatures from earlier games reappear in changed forms.
- 05Controller Limitation
- The game requires keyboard play because controller input is unsupported and may interfere with movement.
