Our take on HIVESWAP: ACT 1
The focus on exploration and puzzles leaves combat outside the game’s stated core. That narrow focus gives the rooms and object interactions room to carry the adventure, but players seeking action-based encounters may find the gameplay scope limited.
What is HIVESWAP: ACT 1?
HIVESWAP: ACT 1 is a hand-drawn adventure set in the Homestuck universe.
Players follow Joey Claire, a teenager taken from 1994 Earth and left on an alien planet amid a rebellion. The game centers on exploring unusual homes and rooms, examining the environment, and solving puzzles. It aims for an adventure-game style associated with the 1990s while avoiding repeated failed-combination messages and puzzles that rely on dreamlike logic. The cast also includes Joey’s brother Jude and the alien Xefros Tritoh. Two-dimensional animation and an eclectic soundtrack accompany the exploration. This is the first installment in a planned four-part series, and the game is presented as a starting point that does not require prior knowledge of Homestuck.
