Is Hinterland worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- RPG players who want settlement management alongside combat
- Strategy players who want each game to use different locations and resources
- Players who enjoy developing characters and assigning settlers to defense or production
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a fixed, story-led campaign may find the changing locations and challenges less suitable
- Players wanting combat without settlement management may not enjoy dividing attention between both systems
- Players looking for prison-escape or crime-focused RPG gameplay will find a different setting and structure here
Our take on Hinterland
Combining settlement management with party combat creates a broader management burden than a combat-only RPG. Randomized locations add changing conditions, but they also replace the consistency of a fixed campaign structure.
What is Hinterland?
Hinterland mixes group-focused role-playing battles with the running of a settlement.
Every session generates a different fantasy setting, including its supplies, gear, and obstacles. Residents come from a broad roster and may receive weapons for protection or equipment for making goods. A humble farmer can become a fighter, while the main character develops chosen specialties. Battles accommodate multiple weapon types and combat positions, such as heavy two-handed strikes and archery. Encounters may involve orc camps, dark elf attackers, mines overrun by goblins, or decaying cities inhabited by undead. Rules can be tuned for severe difficulty or for a setting where raiders never appear. Orc Lords and Shamans provide two playable Orc options, with Shamans calling creatures through totems.
