Our take on Heliophobia
The store presentation emphasizes a vast city and an interwoven mystery, but the core loop is divided between pursuit, exploration, puzzles, and story fragments. The result is less a continuous chase through one setting than a collection of deliberately varied sections.
What is Heliophobia?
Heliophobia is a first-person horror and mystery adventure built around a surreal, non-linear story.
The game begins with the player waking on an empty plane and receiving an order to kill someone identified as “J. R. ” Exploration leads through a nocturnal city of alleys, tunnels, and establishments while monsters and hostile humans pursue the player. Progression alternates between tense encounters, stealth, hiding, running, puzzle-solving, and sections focused on uncovering the setting’s history.
Story segments open in a non-chronological order and can be revisited for further investigation. Glitch effects act as a warning system for nearby danger and can also be disabled. Many areas offer multiple paths or different puzzle solutions, while each section introduces a distinct setting, format, or set of rules.
How Heliophobia plays
- 01Branching Story Structure
- Narrative sections become available out of sequence and remain accessible for later investigation.
- 02Glitch Danger Signals
- Visual distortion indicates nearby threats, with an option to turn the effect off.
- 03Multiple Puzzle Routes
- Several areas support different paths or more than one way to solve their puzzles.
- 04Varied Horror Sections
- Individual challenges change their setting, format, or rules instead of repeating one structure.
