Our take on Heartbound
The skill-based structure gives up familiar RPG progression: there are no levels, experience points, or consumables. Combat instead depends on mini-games, relationships, and past actions, leaving less room for conventional character-building systems.
What is Heartbound?
Follow Lore and Baron, a boy and his dog, through adventures across time and space involving secrets and sanity.
Combat uses skill-based mini-games with different objectives for each enemy, rather than traditional levels, experience, or consumables. Encounters are not random, and some can be avoided depending on progression. Defeating an opponent does not end in death; it reveals that character’s memories from their own perspective. Exploration and interaction with the world can change the story, while weapons found throughout the game modify damage in particular situations. The game also includes optional cryptographic puzzles intended for community solving, varied environments, pixel art, an inspired soundtrack, humor, and extra socks.
How Heartbound plays
- 01Enemy-Specific Combat
- Each opponent uses a distinct mini-game with its own objectives, and combat outcomes depend on player skill.
- 02Choice-Driven Combat
- Combat can change based on relationships with others and actions taken during the game.
- 03Avoidable Encounters
- Some encounters can be skipped depending on how progression unfolds, and battles do not occur randomly.
- 04Perspective-Based Memories
- Defeating a character allows access to memories shown from that character’s point of view.
- 05Optional Cryptographic Puzzles
- A large collection of optional puzzles can be solved with participation from the wider community.
- 06Situational Weapons
- Weapons found throughout the world change the damage dealt in particular situations.
