Is Hard Chip worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Players interested in processor design who want transistor-level construction
- Puzzle fans who prefer planning circuits over using ready-made logic blocks
- Simulation players who want wire length and propagation delay to affect their designs
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a broad range of unrelated simulation activities rather than a focused processor-building challenge
- Players who prefer quick, low-planning puzzles instead of incremental circuit construction and timing constraints
- Players wanting a finished game rather than an Early Access project with changing content
Our take on Hard Chip
The transistor-level approach gives the puzzles an engineering focus, but it removes the convenience of prebuilt logic blocks. Building upward from basic components creates a longer path from the first connection to a functioning processor.
What is Hard Chip?
Design a processor from individual transistors in a three-dimensional puzzle simulation.
Link complementary transistors to create NAND and NOR gates, merge those gates into components, then build progressively larger circuits. The objective is a functioning 8-bit arithmetic logic unit assembled manually according to silicon-based principles. Circuit layout has physical consequences: longer wires and gate delays affect timing, while the slowest signal path sets overall speed. The setting features inactive terminals and quiet machinery, with circuit-building challenges centered on restoring working systems. Hard Chip is currently in Early Access, so its content can change as development proceeds.
How Hard Chip plays
- 01Transistor-Level Construction
- The building process begins with individual transistors instead of pre-made logic blocks.
- 02Layered Circuit Assembly
- NAND and NOR gates can be combined into components and then into larger circuits.
- 03Physical Timing Constraints
- Wire distance and gate delay affect the speed of a design through its slowest signal path.
- 04Eight-Bit ALU Goal
- The progression leads to a manually built 8-bit arithmetic logic unit.
Hard Chip compared to similar games
Hard Chip focuses on constructing an 8-bit processor from transistors, gates, and circuits while accounting for wire length and signal delay. SpaceChem instead has players build chemical-processing factories that transform raw materials into products, so its design workflow centers on production systems rather than processor logic.
