Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players looking for combat-centered gameplay may find the described focus on puzzles and machinery a mismatch.
- Players seeking a broad open world may find the journey’s scope limited to 10 tower levels.
- Players who configure games using only a controller may encounter a barrier at language selection or advanced configuration, which require a mouse and keyboard.
Our take on Golem
Controller-focused players may hit a wall when choosing a language or changing advanced settings: both still require a mouse and keyboard. Controller support for these configuration options is planned, but the current setup creates a specific input barrier before play.
What is Golem?
Golem follows a girl and her transforming companion as they investigate the remains of a long-abandoned tower.
The game spans 10 stages, beginning in underground caverns and reaching elevated turrets overlooking the desert. Each character brings distinct abilities for working through environmental puzzles, crossing damaged sections, and restoring inactive machinery. The companion can develop into five separate shapes, with every form granting additional powers. Wall pictographs provide clues about the structure’s creators and the creature’s beginnings. A mouse and keyboard are needed to choose languages and adjust advanced settings; controller use for those settings is planned.
How Golem plays
- 01Ten tower levels
- The route runs from caverns beneath the tower to turrets above the surrounding desert.
- 02Paired puzzle-solving
- The girl and golem use their different skills to navigate ruined areas and restart machines.
- 03Five golem forms
- Each form gives the golem new abilities for the journey.
- 04Pictograph clues
- The tower’s markings offer clues about its builders and the golem’s origins.
Golem compared to similar games
Jusant also centers on exploring a tower, but its described gameplay focuses on climbing with tools and managing stamina. Golem instead centers on solving puzzles with two characters and reactivating the tower’s machines. The other listed alternatives describe shooters, a runner-shooter, or a narrative RPG rather than this exploration-and-puzzle structure.
