Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a long campaign may hit the end of the story after the stated 2–4 hours of gameplay.
- Players sensitive to sliding VR movement may still find the comfort settings and alternate locomotion inadequate in extreme cases.
- Players without an HTC Vive or Oculus Rift will not have either of the stated headsets for play.
Our take on Gem Hunter
The likely sticking point is VR locomotion: the game uses sliding movement, and the vendor cautions that its comfort settings and alternate methods may not be enough for extreme motion-sickness cases. Players who reach that point may be unable to continue comfortably.
What is Gem Hunter?
Gem Hunter is a VR action platformer for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.
Its story follows a search for stolen Diamonds across magical worlds inside paintings, with a choice between helping the Fox King or aiding one of the Witch Sisters. The game has 10 stages, 28 Diamonds to collect, and 4 boss fights, with multiple endings tied to those choices. Players steer a hovercraft, mine gems to gain ship powers, and use upgrades such as dashing, shields, and spring jumps.
Platforming, puzzles, and enemy encounters are part of the stages. Optional speedrunning leaderboards include 100% and Any% categories, with monthly prizes for top scorers. The vendor gives a 2–4 hour estimate for the story gameplay and notes that sliding locomotion has comfort settings and alternate movement methods.
